Strontium and Calcium Metabolism in Metabolic Bone
نویسنده
چکیده
Skeletal and systemic disease may be reflected in profound alterations of the metabolism of the bone salts. In human skeletal disease attention has focused, for the most part, on the altered metabolism of calcium. Several studies indicate that strontium may have a metabolic pathway similar to that of calcium and that radiostrontium, because of its ease of measurement, might be a convenient indicator for observing the transfer of calcium through the calcium-containing compartments of the body. The investigations to be reported here are concerned with the comparative distribution and fate of calcium and strontium in subjects with altered bone metabolism. Patients with thyroid and parathyroid disease, osteoporosis, and Paget's disease were studied after simultaneous intravenous administration of strontium85 and calcium45. The results indicate that Sr85 closely parallels Ca45 as an index of skeletal function.

Intestinal Calcium Absorption among Hypercalciuric Patients with or without Calcium Kidney Stones.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Idiopathic hypercalciuria is a frequent defect in calcium kidney stone formers that is associated with high intestinal calcium absorption and osteopenia. Characteristics distinguishing hypercalciuric stone formers from hypercalciuric patients without kidney stone history (HNSFs) are unknown and were explored in our study. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS...
متن کاملEffect of low doses of stable strontium on bone metabolism in rats.
The effects of low doses of oral stable strontium (0.19-0.40% of strontium chloride) on mineral and bone metabolism were examined in normal rats using biochemical and histomorphometrical methods. The strontium levels in serum and bone rose according to the intake of the element. Oral strontium supplementation did not produce deleterious effects on body growth or on mineral homeostasis except a ...
متن کاملThe relative retention of strontium and calcium in bone tissue.
The presence of strontium in the bone tissue of vertebrates has been reported by a number of investigators (l-6), although at least two workers found none in the samples analyzed (7, 8). The behavior of strontium in the animal body is of some interest, for, although its metabolic fate is very similar to that of calcium, it cannot supplant calcium in the diet without causing severe disturbances ...

Characteristics of strontium Strontium was discovered in 1790 in a mine close to the Scottish village Strontian and was isolated in 1808. Strontium is one of the alkaline earth metals and is never found in its free form in nature because it easily oxidises, forming strontium oxide. Strontium, along with calcium and magnesium belongs to group 2 of the periodic table which are divalent cations, w...
متن کاملThe effects of strontium-substituted bioactive glasses on osteoblasts and osteoclasts in vitro.
Bioactive glasses (BG) which contain strontium have the potential to combine the known bone regenerative properties of BG with the anabolic and anti-catabolic effects of strontium cations. Here we created a BG series (SiO(2)-P(2)O(5)-Na(2)O-CaO) in which 0-100% of the calcium was substituted by strontium and tested their effects on osteoblasts and osteoclasts in vitro. We show that ions release...
